Each actor brings something unique, and their combined talents create a powerful and moving cinematic experience.

Get to Know the Crew Behind the Scenes

The Whale was an ambitious and deeply-felt film project. Behind the scenes, a talented crew worked hard to bring the story of a lost whale and its human companion to life.  At the helm was the film’s director, Michael Noer. With a background in feature films and documentaries, Michael clearly envisioned how to tell this story on Spacemov. He drew on his experiences with whales at sea and carefully crafted a script that held proper to these experiences. The Whale also featured stunning cinematography by Tyler McLaughlin. Tyler used various camera techniques and lenses to capture the beauty of the sea and the Whale’s unique character.

The Whale’s music was composed by Emma Prendergast. Drawing from her experiences with whale songs, she crafted a beautiful score that perfectly captured the movie’s themes of love, loss, and hope.

Together, these talented individuals worked to create a remarkable film that will be remembered for years.

What It Was Like Filming the Whale

Filming The Whale was a unique experience for both the cast and crew. With a production team of over 40 individuals and a cast of 8 main characters, making this film was an ambitious undertaking that required months of pre-production preparation. From scouting for locations to designing set pieces and costumes, the entire team worked diligently to create an authentic portrayal of the real-life story of Thomas Nickerson, the cabin boy who sailed with Captain Ahab in pursuit of the white Whale. When principal photography began in April 2019, the crew embarked on a journey that would last four months and span multiple states, from California to New England. With their equipment and cast in tow, they set out to capture every detail of the harrowing journey as accurately as possible for Azmovies. To do this, they used a combination of practical effects, makeup, and CGI to bring the scenes to life. This included building detailed miniature sets, shooting on location with whales and dolphins, and more.

At the end of the shoot, everyone gathered to watch a rough cut of the film—the final product of all their hard work. The entire cast and crew were delighted to see their efforts come together in such a beautiful way. Now that The Whale is in theaters, it’s a source of great pride for all involved.
